Rose oil is a highly prized and luxurious essential oil distilled from the petals of damask roses (Rosa damascena) and sometimes other rose species like Rosa centifolia. It's one of the oldest and most expensive essential oils in the world due to the large quantity of petals required to produce a small amount of oil.
The traditional method of rose oil extraction is through hydro distillation, a time-consuming and labour-intensive process. Fresh rose petals are carefully collected and then placed in large copper or stainless-steel vats filled with water. The mixture is gently heated, and as the water boils, the aromatic compounds in the petals are released and carried by the steam. This steam passes through a condenser, where it cools and condenses back into liquid form, separating the rose oil from the water.
